How do I get a copy of Calton Hill Golf GPS?

Please run the Google Play Store app on your Android phone (called the Market app on some older phones) and search for "calton hill".

How much does Calton Hill Golf GPS cost?

Calton Hill Golf GPS costs only US$1.99, €1.49, £1.29, AUS$1.99, etc. This is a one-off charge with no hidden or recurring costs.

Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus, which includes our enhanced Professional Course Mapping Service, costs only US$19.99, €14.99, £12.99, AUS$19.99, etc. Again this is a one-off charge with no hidden or recurring costs.

What's the difference between the standard app and the Plus app?

You probably won't notice any difference when you're on the golf course, but Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus gives you enhanced service from us as follows:

  • Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus users can send us requests to map courses that are not mapped yet. Our professional mappers will complete such requests within 2-5 days.
  • All course maps are reviewed by our professional mappers before being released to Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus users, so you can be confident of the quality of all course maps.
  • Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus contains a course mapping feature within the phone app itself. This allows you to customize your own copy of any course map, creating your own favourite points of interest etc.

Is there an annual subscription fee?

No, the one-off fee gives you a indefinite license to use the software.

Do you charge for course maps?

No, all users get unlimited free course downloads.

What phones can Calton Hill Golf GPS be used on?

Calton Hill Golf GPS can be used on all GPS handsets that run version 1.5 or later of the Android platform. It also works well on many tablet devices, but note that your tablet must support GPS and must have Google's Maps app installed.

Registration

What can I do if I do not receive the confirmation email I was told about during registration?

We suggest you try the following:

How can I change my email address?

Select User Data from the Main Menu, change the Email Address to your new one and send the data. We will send a confirmation email to your new address.

How can I transfer my account to a new phone?

You will be asked to register when you first run Calton Hill Golf GPS on your new phone. Your existing account will be transferred to the new phone if you specify the same User ID and Email Address as before.

Software Features

How do I tell what options are available to me on a particular screen?

Just press the MENU key to see the current options.

How do I track how far I hit my shots?

When Playing a Round, just press the MENU key and select Shot Distance at the place you hit the shot from. Your distance from this place is displayed dynamically in a dialog box as you walk to your ball. As well as measuring your good shots, this can be used to display the distance from where you hit the ball when searching for a lost ball.

How does Automatic Next Hole work?

The app automatically moves to the next hole when it detects you have been close to the middle of the green (within about 30 yards) and then moved away from the green.

Note this feature is disabled if you are recording scores, because you need to enter the scores for the current hole first. You can also disable it altogether in Preferences.

Can I resume a round after exiting it?

Yes, just select Play a Round from the Main Menu. Calton Hill Golf GPS automatically detects if the last round for which you were recording scores was completed. If not, and provided you were playing the round today, it asks you if you want to resume that round.

Why is there sometimes a small grey triangle in the corner of the screen?

Calton Hill Golf GPS needs to rotate the map it obtains from Google to align the hole with tee at the bottom and green at the top. Occasionally the rotated map does not quite fill the corners of the screen. We could avoid this by obtaining a larger area of map prior to rotation, but that leads to significantly poorer graphics resolution. We feel it's better to maximise graphics quality rather than always displaying graphics in the corners where important features are very unlikely to be.

What should I do if the pictures of the course I am playing are not clear?

Occasionally the pictures for part or all of a course are poor quality. If you find that's the case when Playing a Round, you can simply use the Text views when playing that course. You can do this on a temporary basis while playing a hole by pressing the MENU key and selecting More and then Switch to Text View, or on a persistent basis by changing the Default Views within your Preferences (which can be accessed from the Main Menu or by using the MENU key when Playing a Round).

Do I need an internet connection when Playing a Round?

No. An internet connection is used to get the pictures, but you can simply use the Text views if an internet connection is not available for some reason. You can do this on a temporary basis while playing a hole by pressing the MENU key and selecting More and then Switch to Text View, or on a persistent basis by changing the Default Views within your Preferences (which can be accessed from the Main Menu or by using the MENU key when Playing a Round).

How can I correct an error in my score card?

Press the MENU key and select Edit when displaying the score card. You can then select a hole and edit the scores for that hole.

How can I see all my score card without scrolling the screen?

The whole score card will fit on the screen if you choose to list the holes horizontally (see Preferences) and orient the phone horizontally when displaying the score card, provided the players' names are quite short.

How can I backup my scores?

Select My Scores from the Main Menu, then press the MENU key when the list of rounds is displayed and select Backup Rounds. This creates a backup copy of your scores on your SD card (assuming you have an SD card in your phone).

What do the numbers in the boxes mean when Reviewing a course?

If the numbers are "xxx / yyy", xxx is the distance from the tee and yyy is the distance from the middle of the green.

Course Maps

What course maps are available?

Please click on Course List to search our database of courses. The GPS column indicates which courses have GPS maps available.

What's the best way to search for course maps?

You can search for course maps either using this web site or using Calton Hill Golf GPS on your phone.

To use the web site, just click on Course List and use the search features there. You can either select a Country and/or State/Region to see all courses in a particular Country or Region, or you can enter text strings into one or both of the fields Location/City and Course. The search will find all courses that contain matches for all the fields you specify.

Alternatively, you can search the database using Calton Hill Golf GPS and download course maps to your phone as follows:

  • Select Search for Courses from the Main Menu.
  • Specify search criteria by selecting a Country and a Region/State and optionally entering search strings for Location/City and/or Course Name.
  • A list of courses that match your criteria is displayed, for example:

Select a course marked with a tick to download it to your phone now. Users of Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus can also select one marked with a globe to send us a request to map that course. We will send you an email when it's available to download.

What if a course I want to play has not been mapped?

All users can create maps of missing courses using our online Course Mapper tool.

Also, users of Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus only can request us to create a new course map using the phone app as described above.

Why might a satellite picture not match what is actually on the ground?

The course may have been changed recently. If you notice this, please click on Support and report the problem to us.

What if pictures of a course are not clear enough to see the detailed features?

Occasionally the pictures for part or all of a course are poor quality. If you find that's the case when Playing a Round, you can simply use the Text views when playing that course. You can do this on a temporary basis while playing a hole by pressing the MENU key and selecting More and then Switch to Text View, or on a persistent basis by changing the Default Views within your Preferences (which can be accessed from the Main Menu or by using the MENU key when Playing a Round).

Online Course Mapper

Can anyone use the Course Mapper?

All registered users of the Calton Hill Golf GPS apps can use the Course Mapper. You can login to the Course Mapper using the User ID you choose when you first run our app on your phone.

How can I check my User ID?

Run Calton Hill Golf GPS on your phone and select User Data from the main menu. Your User ID is displayed at the top of the User Data screen.

How do I select a course to map?

After logging in, either select a Country and/or State/Region to see all courses in a particular Country or Region, or you can enter text strings into one or both of the fields Location/City and Course. The search will find all courses that contain matches for all the fields you specify.

Courses that have not been mapped yet will have a Create button in the Create/Edit column. Press this button to start mapping the course.

How do I find the location of a new course?

A Google map will be displayed after you press the Create button, centred on the town associated with this course in our database. Pan and zoom the map until you find the exact location of the course.

How do I map the holes of a course?

When using the mapper, information boxes at the left of the screen tell you what to do.

How do I save a map I have created?

After you've mapped tees and greens for all 9 or 18 holes of the course, click the Upload My Map button to save it in our database.

How do I get a map I've created onto my phone?

After uploading your map as described above, it is immediately available for you to download to your phone.

How can I change a map after I've used it on my phone?

The Course Mapper allows the user who created a course to edit it at any time thereafter. You'll find the mapper displays an Edit button in the Create/Edit column for any courses that you have created. Click this button to view and edit the course map. Remember to click the Upload My Map button to save any changes you make. You'll then need to download the course to your phone again.

What if I can't find a course in your database?

Here are some reasons you may not find a course you're looking for:
  • If you've specified a very detailed Course Name (e.g. "bethpage park municipal") try a less detailed search (e.g. just "bethpage").
  • The course may be listed in a different Location/City from the one you specified. Try another search with Location/City left blank.
  • Similarly, the course may be listed in a different Region from the one you specified. Try another search with Region set to "--- All States/Regions ---".
  • Obviously the course may indeed be completely missing from our database. See the next answer below for how to add it yourself. Alternatively, if you're a Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus user, send us an email containing details of the course and we'll add it and map it for you.

How do I add a course that's not in your database?

If you're logged into the Course Mapper and can't find a course, you can press the Add a New Course button. You will be asked to specify the Course Name, Location, Region and Country. Then you can go ahead and map that course.

What if my Country isn't included in your list of Countries?

After pressing the Add a New Course button as described above, if your Country is not already listed you can click a button to add a new Country and Region. Then you can add courses that belong to that Country.

Customising Course Maps

All the questions in this section relate to the course mapping feature within the phone app itself, which is available only to Calton Hill Golf GPS Plus users.

How do I edit or delete a course map?

Select Edit/Review Course Maps from the Main Menu to display a list of the courses stored on your phone.

If you want to edit the course name or location of a course you created yourself, press the course to be edited, then select Edit Description and make the required edits.

If you want to edit the points defined on a course, press the course to be edited, then select Edit Points. A map is displayed, centred on the first tee. You can then add, edit and delete the defined points.

If you want to delete a course from the database on your phone, press the course to be deleted, then select Delete.

When doing course mapping, how do I scroll or zoom the map?

Zoom controls are displayed when you touch the map. Scroll by touching and dragging your finger.

How do I add new features to a course map?

When the course map is displayed as described above, press the MENU key and select Add Points to start adding new points. Cross hairs are displayed and can be dragged around the screen with your finger. Press the button when the cross hairs are in the correct place. A dialog asks you for details of the feature you are marking (e.g. the front of a green) and the number of the hole that it belongs to. Press the button to stop adding points.

When doing course mapping, how can I tell what a particular red marker is marking?

Tap the red marker. The description of that point is displayed in a text box, e.g. "Hole 1 Green Front".

How do I edit or delete a feature in a course map?

When the course map is displayed, tap the red marker of a point. The description of the point is displayed in a text box. Now when you press the MENU key the options include Edit Point and Delete Point which operate on the currently-selected point.

How can I backup changes I make to course maps?

Select Edit/Review Course Maps from the Main Menu, then press the MENU key when the list of courses is displayed and select Backup Courses. This creates a backup copy of all courses currently stored on your phone onto your SD card (assuming you have an SD card in your phone).

Android Phones

How can I make the battery last longer?

Obviously it helps to fully charge the battery before you start a round. There are also many ways to conserve the battery, including:

  • Turn Bluetooth off. From the phone's main Settings menu, select Wireless controls then un-tick the Bluetooth option.
  • Turn WiFi off. From the phone's main Settings menu, select Wireless controls then un-tick the Wi-Fi option.
  • Use only 2G networks. This will slow down the internet connection but helps save the battery. From the phone's main Settings menu, select Wireless controls then Mobile networks then tick the Use only 2G networks option.
  • Lower the screen brightness. From the main Settings menu, select Sound & display then Brightness. However, you may need the brightness set quite high on a bright, sunny day.
  • Switch off the screen when you are not looking at it. The means of doing this varies depending on the make and model of phone (one example is to press the END CALL/POWER key, then press the MENU key twice to switch it on again when needed).
  • Email applications often consume power by frequently checking for messages, but you can disable this. In the standard Android Email application, press the MENU key, select Account settings then Email check frequency and select Never (or just a long period if you prefer).
  • Text Views use less power than the default Graphics Views. You can tell Calton Hill Golf GPS to use Text Views by selecting Preferences from the Main Menu, then selecting Default Views.

(To get at the phone's main Settings menu, press the MENU key when the Home screen is displayed and select the Settings option.)

Is GPS tracking turned off when I turn off my screen?

No. Unlike the iPhone, Android keeps tracking, so you can save power by turning off the screen when you are not looking at it.

What does the message "You need to enable GPS" mean?

Your phone settings specify that GPS satellites are disabled. Display the main Settings menu by pressing the MENU key when the Home screen is displayed and selecting the Settings option. Then select Security & location and tick the Enable GPS satellites option.

What does the message "Location provider disabled by user" mean?

Your phone settings specify that GPS satellites are disabled. Display the main Settings menu by pressing the MENU key when the Home screen is displayed and selecting the Settings option. Then select Security & location and tick the Enable GPS satellites option.

Why might Calton Hill Golf GPS not display distances when I select Play a Round?

Calton Hill Golf GPS needs to know the location of the phone before it can display distances. It will determine the location quickly if you are out on the course, but if you select Play a Round when you are indoors or surrounded by tall buildings it may take some time or be unable to determine the location.

Why might I be unable to backup my course maps or scores?

Backup copies, which are made only when you request them, are created on an SD card in your phone. They will fail if you do not have an SD card or if it does not have enough free space.

Does my phone still accept calls when Calton Hill Golf GPS is running?

Yes, but of course you may choose to put the phone in Silent Mode when you are on the golf course.

Support

How can I request new features or report software problems?

Please click on Support and send us an email describing the request or problem.

Can I report errors in a course map?

Please click on Support and report the problem to us.

What should I do if Calton Hill Golf GPS reports a problem contacting the server?
